What is Sic Bo
Sic Bo, also known as Tai Sai, Dai Su, Big and Small or Hi-Lo, is a game of chance played with three dice and originated in ancient China. Grand Hazard and Chuck-A-Luck are variants of Sic Bo and come from England. The literal translation of Sic Bo means “valuable dice” (dai siu and dai sai mean “big or small”).
According to the legend, it was brought to the USA with the Chinese immigrants and has been a permanent feature in gambling venues ever since. Since 1950, Sic Bo has also been offered in European casinos.
Origins of Online Sic Bo
The first online version of Sic Bo was delivered by the software company Microgaming in 1997, but the game was called Hi Lo (High Low). The game incorporated a board which included all betting possibilities and combinations available to players. The chips were ranging in value from 1 to 100.
Graphics and sound effects were rather basic, as you would expect from a game developed so long ago. The game mechanics of online Sic Bo were also quite simple, since all the player had to do was placing their bets and click the Roll button. Recently, this classic version of Sic Bo online was revamped by Microgaming and re-released with an outstanding 3D twist!
Sic Bo Online Gameplay
Sic Bo is a game of chance, hence there is not much strategy involved. In the first step, the players place their bets on the table. There are over 50 betting fields on which the chips can be placed. Once the players have placed their bets, the croupier turns the dice cup. This resembles the shape of a small birdcage, and the players can keep an eye on the three dice while they roll.
Once the dice have been rolled, the croupier marks all the winning fields. In most casinos, and of course also in online casinos, these fields light up. The losing chips are withdrawn and the winning fields are paid out according to their odds. A new round then begins.
Sic Bo Bets and Payout Ratios
With a house edge of almost 2.5 percent, Sic Bo is one of the casino games with the highest payout ratio. Due to the abundance of betting possibilities, the chances of winning can be increased, but with increasing odds, the risk of losing inevitably increases as well.
- Big/Small bet (payout ratio 1:1). In the Big and Small bet, players place their chips either on the “Small” field, which represents the numbers 4 to 10, or on the “Big” field, where the eye totals from 11 to 17 win. The Big and Small bet is also called “Simple Chance” because it is very similar to betting on red or black at the roulette tables. The payout ratio is 1:1 in the event of a win, but if the croupier throws the same number three times (triple), all bets on Big or Small are lost. That is why the Small series starts with at least four eyes, because three eyes can only be achieved with a triple. The same applies to the Big bet, because the score of 18 can only be made up of three dice with the number 6.
- Specific Triple (payout ratio up to 190:1) In the Specific Triple, the player determines that each of the three dice will show the number he predicted. For example: 6-6-6! Attention: The payout ratio for this bet can be different in every casino. Online providers in particular sometimes reward a Specific Triple with odds of up to 190:1.
- Any Triple ( payout ratio up to 34:1) With the “Any Triple Bet”, players bet on the same number appearing three times, regardless of which number it is.
- Specific Double (payout ratio 11:1). With the Specific Double, the bet is that at least two of the three dice show the predicted number of points. Example: 2-2-X
- The Domino Bet (payout ratio 6:1). This bet gets its name from the betting fields on the table, because they look like dominoes. The bet is that two of the three dice show a certain number. For example: 4-2-X.
- Total Sum Combination. In the Total Sum Combination, the players decide that the sum of the dice will be a certain value. Bets can be placed on the numbers 4 to 17, as the fields 3 and 18 are already included in the “Specific Triple”, they do not appear in the betting line. The payout depends on the number of possible combinations from which the sum can be formed. The more possibilities there are, the lower the payout. Example: The sum of the eyes 12 can be formed from 4-4-4, 5-4-3, 6-4-2, 6-5-1, etc. Due to the high number of possible combinations, the odds are relatively low. The eye sum 4, however, can only be formed from the combination 1-1-2 and therefore has a high payout. The exact odds of the casino providers are very different and can be requested directly from the respective casino.
- The single bet. In this case, bets are placed on the number of points on a single die. Bets can be placed on the numbers 1 to 6. If the number bet appears once, the stake is paid 1:1. If two numbers are bet at 2:1 and all three dice show the number, the bet is rewarded with odds of 15:1.
Real Money Sic Bo Variants
The top real money versions of online Sic Bo are the ones offered by Microgaming and Playtech. Differences are minimal and are mainly limited to the graphical presentation and sounds effects, as the rest of the game rules and payouts are the same. Only the betting limits can vary from provider to provider, but without really deviating much from the usual range of limits. Several of the best Canadian online casinos feature Sic Bo in their game selection.
Live Sic Bo
In addition to the several game variants that are operated by an RNG mechanism, Sic Bo has also found its way into live dealer casinos online. This game is extremely entertaining in its live dealer version and, in our opinion, it’s without a doubt best way to play Sic Bo for real money!
- Super Sic Bo (Evolution Gaming)
- Turquoise Sic Bo (Playtech)
- Sic Bo DeLuxe (Playtech)
- Mega Sic Bo (Pragmatic Play)
Most live Sic Bo games follow the same rules as the traditional online Sic Bo. Hence, live Sic Bo is also played with 3 standard dice. Players can choose from a variety of bet types and place their stakes by using chips. Payouts are displayed clearly on screen for all payers. The croupier then shakes the three dice and bets are paid out based.
